Combined we have more than 60 years of college admission counseling experience. We are college nerds who often plan travel around seeing colleges. Over the years we have visited more than 1,000 college campuses.
Janet Marthers
Janet graduated from Stanford University with a degree in American Studies and later earned her Master’s degree from Reed College. Her professional background includes work in admissions at Oberlin College, Skidmore College, and Vassar College. In addition, she has served as a college advisor at Portland Waldorf School in Oregon and St. Ignatius College Prep in Cleveland, Ohio, and has volunteered with College Horizons, a counseling program supporting Native American youth.
Her speaking engagements have included presentations at The Multnomah Athletic Club, Lincoln High School in Oregon, National Charity League, and Camp Aranutiq in New Hampshire. Since 2001, she has worked primarily with individuals and their families, providing guidance and expertise in the college admissions process.
She is the co‑author of Follow Your Interests to Find the Right College, a book that has been featured in Forbes and received a starred recommendation from School Library Journal.
Paul Marthers
Paul brings more than three decades of experience in college admission counseling across a broad range of institutions, including chief admission/financial aid officer roles at Emory University, Reed College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the State University of New York System. Paul also worked at Oberlin College (Director of Admissions), Duke University (alumni affairs and fund raising—as the point of contact for admission), served as a college counselor, coach, and house counselor at Phillips Academy (Andover), and came up through the admissions profession at Bennington College, Boston College, and Vassar College. In addition, he served on accreditation review teams for Central European University, Lehigh University, New York University (twice), and NYU-Abu Dhabi and was an academic adviser to students at BC, Duke, Emory, and Oberlin.
A prolific writer about college admissions and higher education, his books include Follow Your Interests to Find the Right College; Managing the Whole Student Life Cycle; Eighth Sister No More (an historical exploration of former women’s colleges viewed through the lens of Connecticut College), and more than 30 articles for publications such as College & University , Inside Higher Ed, and the Journal of College Admission . Paul has degrees in English (B.A., Oberlin College), counseling (M.Ed., Boston University), liberal arts (M.A., Reed College), and higher education (Ed.D., University of Pennsylvania).
